Honoring Our Veterans: Kimya Sanders

By Operation Homefront

CarMax is an active supporter of Operation Homefront, and their financial support has contributed to Operation Homefront’s mission to build strong, stable, and secure military families.

Meet Kimya Sanders, a veteran who has made CarMax her civilian career of choice:

Hometown: Columbus, GA
Current Location: Columbus, GA
Military Service Branch: Air Force
Military Rank: E-6
Years Served: 15
Position at CarMax: Business Operations Manager

What inspired you to join the military?

My father retired from the Army and was the first member of his family to join the military.  I always watched him and saw how proud he was to serve. Growing up I knew that I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I had the option to join the Army, Navy, or Air Force. I chose the Air Force because at one point I wanted to learn how to fly a plane.

What were your jobs, roles, and assignments in the service?

I worked in the Personal Property section helping military members and their families with moves from base to base. They had two options; move themselves or have the military move them. Regardless of their choice, I helped guide them through the process.

I also worked in the lodging facility, checking in military and retired guests, ensuring the staff kept the rooms clean, and meeting other guest needs.

Describe a notable moment(s) during your time in the service.

Receiving a medal for serving in Operation Iraq Freedom was a notable moment for me. It was the first and only mission I was selected for.

What were the most rewarding and challenging parts of serving in the military?

Being a part of something bigger than myself. Also, the opportunity for personal growth and learning to be a leader.  I feel like I made a positive impact on the airmen I led and have a sense of pride for having served.

Please describe your job-seeking experience after the military and explain why you chose CarMax.

I was previously in banking but decided to try something different. I saw a Management Assistant role and became interested. After researching CarMax and seeing it was a great place to work, I applied. Now, almost 11 years later, I’m still loving my job and what I do!

Tell us about your role at CarMax. What do you enjoy most about working here?

I am currently the Business Operations Manager in Columbus, GA. In this role, there are a variety of tasks that must be completed daily. I enjoy being in a role where there is repetition, but not every situation is the exact same.  While there are challenges, I appreciate the opportunity to work through them, collaborate, and come up with innovative solutions.

How does your military experience help you succeed in your current role at CarMax?

My military experience taught me how to adapt and overcome obstacles, which can be valuable in a lot of different situations.

Can you discuss Operation Homefront and your experience volunteering for the organization?

I volunteered with Operation Homefront for a back-to-school brigade, where we helped stuff over 100 backpacks for kids of military members. Volunteering for Operation Homefront was an opportunity for me to participate in giving back to military families. Whenever I have the chance to give back to our Armed Forces, I take it! The time I can give is nothing compared to the sacrifices they make.

To Kimya, active-duty military members, and veterans everywhere – thank you for service.
