Military Service Branch: U.S. Marine Corps
Military Rank: Corporal
Years Served: 6
Position at CarMax: Appraisal Specialist
What inspired you to join the military?
Since the age of 12, my inspiration to join the military was the history of the Marine Corps, my family members who had served, and my patriotism. Additionally, I was in the ROTC program for 4 years prior.
What were your jobs, roles, and assignments in the service?
My Military Occupational Specialty (M.O.S) included 0311/Infantry and 8156/Marine Security Guard at Mare Island, Vallejo California.
I was with the infantry Battalions of the 3/9th Marine regiment and the 3/7th Marine Regiment during the Vietnam War era. I was stationed at Camp Schwab in Okinawa and went through Jungle Survival School in the Philippines to prepare for a submarine operation called Thunderhead.
After coming home from overseas I was assigned to Marine Barracks Mare Island in northern California.
Describe a notable moment(s) during your time in the service.
There were countless notable moments shared with my fellow Marines and Corpsman, as well as working with Navy SEALSs, all while experiencing the adventure of being on the Submarine USS Grayback.
One of the most rewarding moments of my service was when we were granted liberty to shore when we landed at Subic Bay, Philippines for 3 days.
What types of challenges did your family face while you were serving?
One of the most significant challenges was being deployed during several Holidays. In particular, spending Christmas and New Years away from family while we were aboard the USS Denver LPD 9 as amphibious ready group off the coast of Nam.
Please describe your job-seeking experience after the military and explain why you chose CarMax.
The transition from military to civilian life was not a smooth one. We were discharged within a week and flew home to a depressed economy. Many companies would not hire former military, so many veterans hid their service while looking for work, as recommended by my cousin, a Marine as well. I did the same.
Many years passed as I worked in the wine and spirits industry, covering all aspects such as retail, distribution, and importation for over 35 years.
I started at CarMax in the Chicago area on October 28, 2012.I began as a Sales Consultant at the Hillside store and then moved to the Naperville store, before transferring to my current location in Gilbert, Arizona in December 2017.
Tell us about your role at CarMax. What do you enjoy most about working here?
I have served in the role of Auction Services Associate (ASA) for over five years. I enjoy it very much because it allows me to interact with our customers and many friends and associates across CarMax.
How does your military experience help you succeed in your current role at CarMax?
My military experience has instilled the discipline to persevere regardless of scenario. It has also taught me the importance of always being on time or being ready prior to schedule.
Can you discuss Operation Homefront and your experience volunteering for the organization?
Volunteering for Operation Homefront reminds me of the camaraderie of military life. I also enjoy giving back to those who serve our country because I understand the many sacrifices they are making to keep our country safe.
To Bill, active-duty military members, and veterans everywhere – thank you for service.
