Unlocking Free Benefits and Grants for Veterans

By Operation Homefront

May 14, 2026

Do veterans get free stuff?

Veterans are eligible for a wide array of free benefits for veterans that are often misunderstood or overlooked. These are just small tokens of gratitude that our country provides in response to the dedication and sacrifice of service to our nation. Besides federal VA programs, many nonprofits and military support organizations offer no‑cost assistance and financial assistance for veterans. These may include veteran emergency grants, free housing for veterans (via nonprofit programs), free counseling or veteran mental health services, event tickets, education support, and more.

What is a veteran grant?

A veteran grant is financial assistance provided to qualified veterans, typically to help with housing stability, emergencies, home adaptations, or transitional needs. Veteran grants do not need to be repaid.

Examples include:

Several nonprofits also provide veteran emergency grants for sudden hardships.

Can veterans get help with bills?

Veterans can receive assistance with a variety of bills through programs offering assistance with bills for veterans, including:

  • Rent or mortgage payments
  • Utilities and energy bills
  • Groceries or food via emergency relief or grocery cards
  • Car repairs, auto insurance
  • Home appliances or critical baby supplies

Operation Homefront’s Critical Financial Assistance program directly addresses these needs following a verified hardship. This program provides financial assistance for veterans. Veterans may also access support through VA hardship payment plans or temporary suspension of benefit debts to free up funds for essential living costs.
