Air Force Family Grateful for New School Supplies

Dayton House was working as a police officer when four years ago he took an active-duty reserve job with the Air Force.

He has been in the Air Force for nine years total including the reserve.

“I was burned out with my job and decided I wanted to do something different,” he said.

He has worked in Langley, Virginia, for a mission involving Air Force One and was deployed to Guam and Japan.

He and his wife, Victoria, along with their three children, live in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Dayton is stationed at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base.

For the past three years, Dayton and Victoria have taken their kids to Operation Homefront’s Back-to-School Brigade® events. Since its inception in 2008, BTSB has delivered more than 535,000 backpacks to military children. The backpacks are filled with school supplies.

In August 2024, Dayton and his family were among 240 people registered for the BTSB event at the base. It was one of dozens across the U.S. to help military families offset the cost of buying school supplies.

“BTSB takes away a lot of the burden and worry about getting specific supplies.” – Dayton House, Air Force

The House children were familiar with the BTSB venue because it took place in where his son goes for before-school and after-school care. The three children felt comfortable exploring the different tables and picking out their backpacks.

“They had a room that had refreshments and games for all the kids,” Dayton said. “It was nice.”

He and Victoria said the event helps offset the cost of supplies and, just as important, makes preparing for school less stressful.

“It’s helpful and beneficial,” Victoria said.

“BTSB takes away a lot of the burden and worry about getting specific supplies,” Dayton added. “It saves us the time from having to worry about what we may not have gotten.”
