Operation Homefront Housing Program ‘Once in a Lifetime’ Opportunity

Kenneth Kelly loved his job in the Army as a geospatial engineer and terrain analyst, collecting and analyzing data related to terrain, weather, geography, and structures.

During his 16 years of service, Kenneth deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, along with conducting missions in South Korea and Europe.

After being wounded, years of wear and tear on his body, and health issues, Kenneth opted to honorably discharge in 2023.

He and his wife, Jerica, were living in an apartment once Kenneth left the military, but they wanted to become homeowners to provide a more stable environment for themselves and especially for their three kids—Kalo, 2; Kelis, 3; and Kenneth Jr., 13.

Kenneth was researching veteran loans and trying to find housing assistance programs when, in a VA newsletter, he came across Operation Homefront’s Transitional Homes for Veterans (THV) program

Through the THV program, veterans within 10 years of discharge can live rent-free in a house for two to three years as they build savings, reduce debt, and become established in careers and the community.

Kenneth transitioned out of Fort Polk in Leesville, Louisiana. When he saw a THV home located three hours away in Zachary, he knew he had to apply. The family was accepted and moved into the home in July.

“The house is amazing,” Jerica said.

“It’s beautiful,” Kenneth added. “Everything has been a plus.”

The THV program aligns with the goals Kenneth and Jerica have for home ownership. They were already trying to increase their credit score and save money for a down payment. The couple is excited to increase their financial literacy and learn more about becoming homeowners. Plus, their family is just two hours away in Mississippi, providing even more support.

Living rent free means that Jerica can continue going to school to earn her degree in criminal justice while Kenneth embraces his role as a stay-at-home dad.

If both had to work, they would also have to buy another car and put the younger ones in daycare, something that would cost even more.

“I am thankful this program even exists. The opportunity to gain an understanding of the home-buying process, increase our credit score, pay off debts, build substantial savings… this program is a life changer for us!” – Kenneth Kelly, Army veteran

“This is a blessing,” Jerica said. “It’s like winning the lottery. We prayed for this and couldn’t even believe we got the opportunity. It feels like a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and we are grateful.”

Kenneth can also focus more on his health during his time in the program.

“I am thankful this program even exists,” Kenneth said. “The opportunity to gain an understanding of the home buying process, increase your credit score, pay off debts, build substantial savings, all while providing an amazing house…this program is a life changer for us!”

Since it began in 2018, the THV program has defrayed more than $2.2 million in mortgage costs to military families and graduated 45 families.
