Operation Homefront Provides Support, Financial Relief to Grieving Family
Brian J. joined the military in 2005 to stabilize the family he and his wife, Jessica, had started.
The couple had 3-month-old twins and two daughters when they reached Fort Bragg, North Carolina — their first duty station. During their time served, they grew their family by four more children who all now range in age from 6 to 24.
Brian enslisted in the Army as a culinary specialist and transitioned during his military career to serve as an aviation instructor. He served 14 years including a deployment to Iraq.
Tragedy struck Brian and Jessica’s family in March 2025 when nearly a dozen individuals ambushed their 19-year-old during a basketball game at a park in Tampa, Florida. He was shot three times and died later at the hospital.
“We truly appreciate their help, all that they do for military families, but specifically what they did for our family.” – Jessica Jones, Army spouse
As they navigated their grief and funeral-related costs impacted the family budget, Brian and Jessica felt financial stability slipping from their grasp. The unexpected expenses while planning the service in St. Petersburg, Florida, strained the family’s single-income budget.

Jessica, who was a stay-at-home mom, and Brian, who worked assembling fitness equipment after his separation from service, didn’t have enough left over to cover their rent for the month.
They reached out to Operation Homefront’s Critical Financial Assistance Program® for help. The program is designed to provide short-term financial help for military families who are experiencing financial hardship.
The family knew about the nonprofit organization through events such as Back-to-School Brigade® and Holiday Meals for Military® that support active duty and veteran families across the country.
The caseworker immediately offered outside resources for assistance with burial costs. Then, they applied for and were granted assistance to relieve the threat housing insecurity in the aftermath of their son’s death.
Thanks to Operation Homefront’s donors, including Wounded Warrior Project, the family received $2,500 in rent assistance.
“We truly appreciate their help, all that they do for military families, and specifically what they did for our family, allowing us to be able to bury our son, and also the support that came afterwards,” Jessica said. “Because in the aftermath of it all , you don’t want to be dealing with eviction or anything like that. So just truly, we appreciate them for standing in the gap.”
